Employee Profiles
Jim Schaefer is a landscape architect with over fifteen years of landscape master planning and detailed site design experience. He has conceptualized, detailed, budgeted, and implemented landscape and urban design projects throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest. His designs for uniquely crafted spaces and architectural features grace public gardens, community & neighborhood parks, corporate campus, office and retail venues, urban plazas, and public streets. Jim is skilled in the creation of graphic design concepts, detailed construction plans and specifications, site construction budgets, and phasing strategies. A strength is the creation of compelling site features such as masonry monuments, gateway signage structures, metal artworks, custom landscape accessory buildings, park shelters, trellage & arbors. He organizes diverse planting schemes, and is equally well versed in planting knowledge for traditional gardens, or native sustainable plant communities.
Jim spent the previous eight years with Buettner & Associates in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he honed his skills designing public gardens, plazas, architectural features, commercial development planting schemes, and resort environments. Prior to Buettner, Jim apprenticed for three years at Miyabara Associates in Honolulu, Hawaii. Park design was the focus—from neighborhood to regional in scale.
Jim served as a plan commissioner, and architectural review board member in Glendale, Wisconsin from 1999-2002, and he is one of the founding commissioners on the City of Stoughton, Wisconsin, Redevelopment Authority.
At Vandewalle & Associates, Jim is primarily responsible for the site design of urban development projects, park design and open space planning. He is currently planning a dramatic reforestation and community gateway landscape for two new highway interchanges in the City of Wausau, Wisconsin. And he is part of the team creating a new riverwalk in Waterloo, Iowa. This renovation will create a more attractive and engaging waterfront, and a dynamic civic amphitheater.
