Employee Profiles
Dan Kennelly is an associate planner specializing in redevelopment, economic development,
and renewable energy projects. Dan’s work includes drafting downtown and neighborhood
plans, creating tax increment finance districts, shaping economic development strategies, and
identifying community-based renewable energy opportunities. Dan helps clients define a
strategic direction and helps them pursue that direction by framing specific projects, creating
timelines and funding strategies, building business-to-business and public/private partnerships,
and attracting state and federal grants.
Dan’s particular area of focus is economic development projects that link local resources and
businesses to renewable energy opportunities. Dan’s recent and ongoing energy-related projects
include laying the groundwork for a large-scale stationary fuel cell system utilizing industrial
byproduct hydrogen, working with a manufacturing facility on a waste heat recovery system,
assisting a feedstock assessment for a bioenergy power facility, and creating a green enterprise
zone linking energy projects to existing development incentives. Every place has assets that
create opportunities to generate locally-sourced green energy, and Dan helps clients identify the
technologies, partners, and funding sources needed to translate these opportunities into
innovative energy projects.
Dan’s economic analysis background and understanding of market dynamics bring insight and a
strong dose of realism to his work. Prior to joining Vandewalle & Associates, Dan was an analyst in
the Chicago office of Economics Research Associates (ERA/AECOM) where he worked with
communities, developers, and corporations on real estate market research, feasibility studies,
downtown market studies, and economic impact analyses. Dan’s previous experience also
includes working for local planning departments in Detroit and the Chicago area, as well as
working on state-level environmental and energy policy issues for a non-profit organization.
